Helping your child form dental hygiene habits is vital. These habits can stay with your child for a lifetime, thus helping them have a healthier smile. But how can you get your child excited about dental hygiene and dental care? Dr. Jeremy Johnson and our team at Monroe Smiles are thrilled to offer some tips for making dental hygiene fun and exciting for your son or daughter!

Brush & Floss With Your Child
To get your child excited about brushing and flossing, consider cleaning your teeth together. Children mimic what they see their parents doing. Show your child proper brushing and flossing technique. This includes teaching them proper dental hygiene by example. If your child is too young to brush and floss their teeth on their own, assist him or her.

Exciting Toothbrush
Allow your child to pick out their toothbrush, or choose one for them that is colorful or that has his or her favorite cartoon character on it. Make sure that the toothbrush has soft bristles and a head that is small enough to fit in all areas of your child’s mouth. If your son or daughter’s toothbrush is fun, they will be more excited about brushing their teeth.

Exciting Toothpaste
If the right type is chosen, toothpaste can be exciting or fun for your child. It is likely that your child will not be excited about minty toothpaste. However, he or she might race to brush his or her teeth if the toothpaste had a tasty flavor like cinnamon, strawberry, watermelon, or cinnamon. Children’s toothpaste also comes in fun colors or with sparkles.
